The government is urging students placed in public universities for the 2026/2027 academic year to apply for scholarships under the Student-Centred Funding Model.
The Universities Fund has allocated 30.8 billion Kenyan shillings to support university education. The scholarships are available to the 202,133 students placed in public universities by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service, the fund said.
Applications are open through the Higher Education Financing portal and must be submitted by Sept. 6.
Acting Universities Fund Chief Executive Officer Edwin Wanyonyi encouraged early applications to allow time for processing and disbursement before the academic year begins.
“We encourage public university students to apply for the Universities Fund scholarships as early as possible to facilitate the timely processing, award and disbursement of financial support ahead of the commencement of their studies,” Wanyonyi said.
Under the Student-Centred Funding Model, students admitted to public universities qualify for both Universities Fund scholarships and Higher Education Loans Board loans. Students joining private universities are eligible only for HELB loans.
Wanyonyi urged applicants to provide accurate and complete information to avoid delays.
“I encourage parents, guardians and sponsors to support students throughout the application process and ensure they have all the necessary documents ready in advance to enable them to complete their applications on time,” he said.
The Universities Fund has launched a nationwide awareness campaign called #WahiScholarship to educate students on the application process, eligibility and deadlines. The initiative aims to ensure no eligible student misses out due to lack of information.
Since the model was introduced in 2023, more than 400,000 students have benefited from government scholarships. The first cohort is expected to graduate next year.
