Inside North Rift’s Sports Media Revolution: Empowering the Next Generation of Sports Journalists
The initiative aims to empower the next generation of sports journalists in the North Rift region, an area globally recognized as Kenya’s athletics powerhouse and home to some of the world’s greatest long-distance runners.

This short video documentary highlights a Sports Media Sensitization Forum organized by the Uasin Gishu Journalists Association and the Eldoret Media Hub in partnership with Joseph Mecha, Coordinator of the Media Council of Kenya North Rift Region.
The initiative aims to empower the next generation of sports journalists in the North Rift region, an area globally recognized as Kenya’s athletics powerhouse and home to some of the world’s greatest long-distance runners.
The session was led by renowned sports journalists ,Bernard Rotich of Daily Nation and Elias Makori, a former Nation Media Group Managing Editor for Sports, who brings over 25 years of experience in sports journalism. During the engagement, journalists were equipped with skills in sports reporting, storytelling, digital media, professional ethics, and content monetization.
The forum also created a platform for journalists, coaches, and stakeholders to discuss athlete welfare, sports development, and the importance of telling inspiring human-interest stories behind Kenya’s athletic success.
Through such engagements, Uasin Gishu Journalists Association hopes to strengthen credible and impactful sports journalism while nurturing fresh talent that will shape the future of sports media in the region and beyond.
