A tragic gold mine collapse has resulted in the death of 15 artisanal miners while six others suffered serious injuries which have created a somber atmosphere throughout the Romos region of Morita. The Thursday evening disaster has renewed concerns over illegal and unregulated mining activities in the region which leaders now demand for immediate safety standard reforms to safeguard local communities.

The collapse happened when deep mining shaft walls suddenly collapsed two mining workers because they were working above rock and soil material. Residents and fellow miners started rescue operations through the use of hoes spades and their hands but all efforts failed because the underground area remained unreachable. The team continued their work through the night until Friday morning despite facing challenges from unstable ground and large debris.

David Saruni who visited the scene with county security officials and mining officers and local leaders confirmed that 21 miners had been trapped during the collapse.

“So far, 15 bodies have been retrieved while six survivors are receiving treatment at the hospital,” Saruni said.

He described the incident as one of the deadliest mining disasters ever recorded in the county because of how difficult it proved to conduct rescue operations throughout the rugged terrain.

“This is a painful tragedy for the people of Romos and the entire county. We appreciate everyone who participated in the rescue mission under extremely dangerous conditions,” he said.

The county commissioner delivered condolences to the affected families while he praised rescue teams and medical personnel and police officers and local residents for their efficient emergency response.

Saruni issued a warning about dangerous mining methods which included unauthorized explosive usage for gold extraction. He stated that authorities would enhance their oversight and safety enforcement activities in mining areas to control these practices. The tragedy has sparked renewed calls for stricter regulation of artisanal mining activities in West Pokot to prevent further loss of life.
