Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has explained his absence from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Parliamentary Group meeting held in Mombasa, alleging that there were plans to attack him.
Sifuna revealed during the radio interview that people had been arranged to attack him if he went to the meeting which forced him to choose between attending or protecting himself.
“I could not attend that meeting. He said that many party meetings were planned which required attendance because they would attack you during the meeting. They organize gangs to attack you,” he said.
The ODM Secretary General further alleged that similar incidents had occurred in previous party gatherings, including meetings held in Kilifi and Mombasa.
“The same was also seen in Mombasa; there were gangs that were deployed to cause chaos,” he added.
Sifuna who belongs to the Linda Mwananchi faction within ODM claimed that party leaders are excluding him because he disagrees with their backing of President William Ruto for the 2027 General Election.
He accused some party leaders of lacking sincerity in resolving internal disputes.
“Our brothers are not genuine during these talks. Sifuna stated that Ida Odinga requested them to fix their party problems before they could start formal talks.
He maintained that ideological differences particularly over support for President Ruto are at the core of divisions within the party.
“
The only thing causing divisions within ODM is some members supporting President Ruto for the 2027 elections. That is the only problem they have with me,” he stated.
In his argument Sifuna documented the party’s founding principles which Raila Odinga established as the basis for ODM to forge alliances only with civic organizations that shared their fundamental principles.
The senator has joined James Orengo and Babu Owino to form a faction called Linda Mwananchi which opposes the current government.
The Mombasa meeting brought together nearly 100 ODM parliamentary group members 13 governors and members of the party’s National Executive Council to address ongoing internal party conflicts.
