The couple lost their lives in an accident on Mwea–Embu Highway after they returned from the burial of Ex-Senator Karaba. The residents of Difathas and nearby areas experienced shock when a couple died in a road accident that occurred on Mwea–Embu Highway during Wednesday night.
The couple who died in the accident were identified as Michael Mbugua Karaba who was 52 years old and his wife Felister Mbugua who was 48 years old. The couple was returning to their Murinduko home after they attended the burial for former Kirinyaga senator Daniel Karaba who was their family member.
The couple who were riding a motorcycle suffered an accident when a vehicle which attempted to overtake a lorry struck them. The collision resulted in severe injuries which threw Felister off the road while Michael became trapped beneath the motorcycle. Both of them died instantly at the scene.
The couple’s phone call reached their son who answered the phone thus the family could identify their Murinduko residence. The family members including David Mwai and Martin Mwaura arrived at the location and they confirmed the identity of the deceased body while also determining their relationship to the late senator.
Mwaura spoke at the scene about their current situation which had destroyed their family.
“This is a double tragedy. We have just laid Karaba to rest, and now we are mourning two more lives. It is overwhelming,” he said.
Local residents have expressed concern about the rising number of highway accidents which require immediate safety improvements to protect drivers. Joseph Mwangi who lives in the area stated that a schoolboy had died at the same location one week before the current accident occurred which created a need for traffic safety measures.
The vehicle which carried five adults and two children travelled from Meru to Nairobi following a burial service. Authorities towed both the vehicle and the motorcycle to Wang’uru Police Station as investigations into the accident continue.
