Ali Abdullahi Surraw takes the oath of office today as the Commission Secretary and Chief Executive Officer to signpost the entry by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) into a new phase. This oath-taking ceremony by the Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court, Lady Justice Martha Koome, was done in accordance with the Constitution and laws relevant to the workings of the Commission.
Almost two decades of experience in leadership roles in public management, governance, human resource management and financial administration have seen Mr Surraw come to the SRC. It is hoped that with his in-depth experience, he will help strengthen the Commission as it continues to fulfil its constitutional mandate to manage and advise on public service remuneration.
Before his recent appointment, Mr Surraw served as Deputy Registrar of Political Parties and Deputy Chief Executive Officer at the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties. In this capacitated role, Mr Surraw was instrumental in institutional restructuring, the automation of human resource systems, strategic engagement with stakeholders as well as strengthening the frameworks between the organisation and its stakeholders.
He also held various other positions of great importance in the public and private sector. These include serving as County Executive Committee Member for Finance and Economic Planning in Isiolo County, Executive Director at Millennium Innovation Consulting Group, Branch Manager at the National Social Security Fund, and Elections Coordinator at the Independent and Boundaries Commission. His broad background has furnished him with much experience in governance, finance and institutional leadership.
Speaking after taking the oath of office, Mr Surraw reaffirmed his commitment to support the SRC in its efficient realization of constitutional mandates. He emphasized the need for institutional integrity, multi-stakeholder collaboration and evidence-based decision-making in contributing to fair, sustainable and fiscally responsible payout outcomes in public service.
“I am committed to working with the Commission and all stakeholders in enhancing transparency, accountability and fairness in the management of public sector remuneration,” he reiterated.
SRC congratulating Mr Surraw on his appointment and stating their confidence in his leadership as the Commission advances its mandate. According to the Commission, it is looking forward to working closely with the new Secretary and CEO to promote national development priorities while upholding the principles of fiscal discipline, transparency, equity, accountability and good governance.
The SRC plays a crucial constitutional role in setting and reviewing the remuneration and benefits for state officers and advising national and county governments on the remuneration and benefits for other public officers. Mr Surraw’s appointment comes as the Commission implements reforms to ensure better and more sustainable management with respect to wage management in the public sector.
With extensive experience in governance, finance and institutional leadership, Mr Surraw is likely to consolidate the Commission’s efforts towards its mandate and address the emerging challenges faced in the management of remuneration in the public sector.
