William Ruto, the head of the state, is going to open the second national phase of the NYOTA Project today in Eldoret. This important national event is a major step forward in creating government efforts to empower youth throng entrepreneurship and financial inclusion.

The launch event would also serve to disburse funds for young people who have successfully passed other requirements under the program at the Eldoret Sports Club. The NYOTA Initiative expects to reach unemployed and underemployed youth with the goal of equipping them with resources and support to start or expand income-gaining activities.

By the end of this phase, according to the Ministry of Cooperatives, Trade and Industry, over 50,000 young beneficiaries will receive cash support. Each beneficiary will receive an amount of Ksh. 22,000 that will be credited directly to their mobile wallets under NYOTA to allow easy access and accountability. Moreover, Ksh. 3,000 will also be credited to an account set in every beneficiary’s name with the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), thus encouraging a saving culture among the youth and strengthening their long-term financial security.

It is said by government officials that this program mostly targets relieving the beneficiaries temporarily financially, but then further leads those youths into sustainable livelihoods such as investing in smaller businesses, skills development, and other entrepreneurial ventures. The NYOTA Project falls as part of the broader Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, making the youth and small-scale entrepreneurs in the center of economic growth.

This disbursement exercise will be held in various counties located in the North Rift and in the surrounding regions. People from counties like Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Trans-Nzoia, Turkana, and West Pokot have scheduled to be funded during the Eldoret launch and related activities. Local communicators and program officials have been placed to handle the exercise and ensure transparency and smooth implementation.

Beyond the North Rift region, similar events related to disbursement of cash under the NYOTA initiative are being planned elsewhere in the country. In fact, Nakuru will host follow-up activities on January 9 and January 12, whereby the youth of Nakuru, Narok, Bomet, Kericho, Baringo, Laikipia, Isiolo, and Samburu counties will also benefit from the initiative. These national rollouts are anticipated to take the initiative to the eligible youth across the geographical breadth.

Successful beneficiaries have also been encouraged by the officials to use funds to raise themselves out of consumption and create permanent income sources, as phase two of NYOTA lies on lessons learned from the first roll-out, in improved coordination, digital payment systems, and enhanced monitoring mechanisms.

President Ruto will not lack a feeling of optimism at the launch in Eldoret since it is anticipated to bring renewed hope to thousands of young Kenyans struggling with unemployment and limited economic opportunities. The NYOTA Project is being positioned as a key intervention in addressing youth joblessness while nurturing a new generation of entrepreneurs capable of driving grassroots economic development.
