Authorities in Homa Bay County have arrested a suspect and recovered a substantial consignment of bhang following a targeted police operation in Kanyadhiang, Rachuonyo North Sub-County. The arrest comes after security officers acted on credible intelligence shared by members of the public regarding the movement of narcotics along the Kendu Bay–Homa Bay Road, which has increasingly become a transit route for illegal drugs.
According to a police incident report seen by Radio Ramogi, officers mounted a strategic swoop on the route, which led to the intercepting of a white Toyota Corolla, registration number KAM 168U. The said vehicle had raised suspicion with its movements, was flagged down and immediately subjected to a thorough search.
Inside, police found four sacks that were well-wrapped with what was later revealed to be bhang. The haul included 1,825 rolls, 113 broom-shaped bundles, and an additional 4 kilograms of unpacked cannabis, all hidden in a way to avoid detection. The quantity recovered suggests that the drugs were likely being transported for distribution into a wider market beyond the local area.
Police think the consignment might be part of a wider network of illegal trafficking in the region, considering that the Kendu Bay-Homa Bay corridor has been a hotspot identified for illicit movement of drugs. The arrest has, therefore, been hailed as a significant step toward the disruption of ongoing trade, although the officers note that investigations are still at an early stage.
The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released to the public, was immediately detained and escorted to Kendu Bay Police Station. Currently, he is being processed as investigators prepare to present him before the courts. Charges that will most likely be preferred against him are possession and transportation of narcotic drugs, offences that attract stiff penalties in Kenyan law.
Security officials from the region praised members of the public for providing information that enabled them to conduct a successful operation. They reiterated the call for continued cooperation between residents and law enforcement agencies, particularly in operations aimed at preventing the proliferation of dangerous illegal drugs, which are seriously threatening community safety and youth welfare.
Police have also assured that surveillance along major transport routes within Homa Bay County would be enhanced in order to curb such activities. More operations targeting suspected drug suppliers and traffickers are expected in the coming weeks, part of an ongoing crackdown on narcotics within the Nyanza region. Authorities have asked those engaged in drug trafficking to stop the practice before the law catches up with them, emphasizing that the government is still determined to eradicate the drug business.
