Police in Uasin Gishu County have arrested a lorry carrying six bales of bhang worth KSh 9.5 million. The 190-kilogramme drugs were seized after the public tipped off the police on the suspicious vehicle. Police from Baharini Police Station, following the tip-off, ambushed the vehicle under the operation of the OCS and County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi.

The bus originated from Busia County. The traffickers had concealed the bhang among other commodities. To mask the smell, they had sprayed the drugs and shrouded them in additional packages. This was a new method by dealers to avoid detection, Commander Mwanthi explained.

“This is the second major bust in a month. The traffickers are now using parcel delivery vans, as opposed to regular transport vans previously,” he added.

He praised members of the public for being on the lookout and requested that they continue assisting the police. Mwanthi reiterated that the bhang was headed to Mombasa and would have ruined the lives of many young people if it reached the market.

The lorry driver was arrested and remains in custody as investigations continue. Mwanthi disclosed that the police have confiscated over KSh 30 million worth of bhang within a month alone. He appealed to the judiciary to sentence drug dealers with enhanced sentences in order to discourage the business.

We must guard our youths. Bhang destroys futures and dreams,” he said. He also asked schools to co-operate with the police by availing doors for sniffer dogs on opening days, especially in high schools and universities.

The commander also noted that the fight against illegal liquor in the nation has also borne fruits, with a drastic drop in its sale and consumption. He credited this to tougher enforcement tactics.

Police vowed to intensify efforts to combat narcotics. They requested that the public continue giving any drug trafficking information to the nearest police stations.
