Newcastle United have agreed a deal to sign England international goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton on a season-long loan with a substantial fee and an option to buy, a person with knowledge of the negotiations said Tuesday, July 30.
Ramsdale is expected to undergo a medical in the coming days ahead of joining Eddie Howe’s squad for the 2025–26 Premier League campaign.
The loan agreement includes a significant fee but does not mandate a permanent transfer next summer, according to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the club has not made the deal public.
The 26-year-old, who joined Southampton in January after a high-profile move from Arsenal to boost his playing time, is set for another fresh start. His time at Arsenal saw him initially impress but later lose his starting role to David Raya, prompting the move to Southampton, where he rebuilt his form in the second half of last season.
Newcastle, seeking greater depth and competition in goal, targeted Ramsdale to bolster a squad aiming to return to European competition. The Magpies have relied heavily on Nick Pope, whose long-term shoulder injury last season highlighted the need for additional experienced cover.
Howe, familiar with Ramsdale from their shared stint at Bournemouth, views the goalkeeper as a strong character and technically sound option capable of challenging for the No. 1 spot.
Ramsdale has made four appearances for England and was part of the squad at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup, though he has largely served in a backup role.
With pre-season preparations entering the final stretch, Newcastle are keen to integrate Ramsdale quickly and finalize other reinforcements before the transfer window closes in August.
