French soccer star Kylian Mbappé has officially taken the No. 10 jersey at Real Madrid, fulfilling a lifelong dream after a record-breaking debut season with the club.
Mbappé, who joined Madrid last summer, had initially declined the iconic number out of respect for veteran midfielder Luka Modrić. But following Modrić’s departure from the squad earlier this month, the club offered the shirt to Mbappé, and he accepted, club sources said Tuesday.
“𝑪𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒅𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒎 𝒃𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚,” the 26-year-old forward posted on social media alongside a photo of himself holding the No. 10 shirt during a presentation at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
Mbappé scored a club-record 48 goals across all competitions in his first season, helping Madrid to a domestic league title and a deep run in the UEFA Champions League. His performances earned him wide acclaim and solidified his role as the club’s new focal point in attack.
The No. 10 shirt at Madrid has been worn by legends including Ferenc Puskás, Michael Laudrup and, most recently, Modrić, who held the number for over a decade.
Club president Florentino Pérez praised Mbappé’s humility and leadership. “He’s not just a phenomenal player—he’s someone who understands the values of Real Madrid,” Pérez said.
Mbappé will debut the new number when Madrid opens its La Liga campaign next week against Real Betis.
