Police constable pleads not guilty in killing of street vendor outside Imenti House
The prosecution opposed the application, citing a sworn affidavit outlining its reasons for objecting to bond issuance. A lawyer representing Mwangi’s family also urged the court to deny bond, aligning with the prosecution’s position.

Police Constable Klinzy Masinde Barasa pleaded not guilty Monday to the murder of street vendor Boniface Kariuki Mwangi, who was shot and killed June 17 outside Imenti House in Nairobi, following a mental assessment that declared him fit to stand trial, July 28, 2025.
Barasa faces a charge of murder contrary to Section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code. The plea was formally entered after government psychiatrist Priscila Makau, in a report dated July 21, confirmed the officer was mentally fit to participate in legal proceedings.
During the court appearance, Barasa’s defense counsel applied for his release on bond. The prosecution opposed the application, citing a sworn affidavit outlining its reasons for objecting to bond issuance. A lawyer representing Mwangi’s family also urged the court to deny bond, aligning with the prosecution’s position.
The court is expected to issue a ruling on the bond application at a later date.
