President William Ruto has pushed back against claims that he made unrealistic promises before his election, arguing that his ambitious plans are rooted in a desire to elevate the country’s standards, not to mislead voters.

While addressing worshippers at a church service in Machakos on Sunday, Ruto challenged Kenyans to shift away from a culture of complacency and instead embrace a vision grounded in excellence and meaningful change.

“We have operated at an average level for too long. It’s time to break free from that,” Ruto said. “We must strive for more. That is what I’m committed to.”

He clarified that what some see as overpromising is actually an intentional effort to inspire greater national ambition.

“People claim I promised too much. But I say this: we are not exaggerating—we are lifting our expectations as a country,” he remarked.

Ruto reaffirmed his dedication to fulfilling the pledges he made during his campaign, revealing that some leaders had suggested he should walk back some of those promises. He said he firmly rejected that idea.

“One bishop told me, ‘You said all those things just to win votes—now you need to start scaling back.’ But I have no intention of retreating. I stand by every promise I made,” he said.

The President pointed to tangible progress in sectors such as agriculture and healthcare, saying the foundation for transformation has already been laid.

“Our economy is on the rise, and the data supports that. From maize and tea to sugar and healthcare, improvements are visible,” he added. “With unity and God’s help, we will see a transformed Kenya in our time.”
