Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Director Mohammed Amin on Monday denied reports that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua had been summoned over his alleged role in the June 25 protests.

Speaking at a media briefing at DCI headquarters, Amin said Gachagua had not been contacted by the Directorate but emphasized that “he does not enjoy any immunity against prosecution; he is subject to the laws of the land.” He added that should investigations link Gachagua to criminal activity during the protests—whether as a perpetrator, accomplice or accessory—“appropriate action will be taken.”

Addressing the recent wave of Gen Z-led demonstrations, Amin acknowledged that many protesters had acted peacefully and within their constitutional rights. However, he said a criminal element had infiltrated the gatherings.

“Intelligence reports and arrest records show that some individuals, acting under explicit instructions, planned attacks on government buildings and security facilities,” Amin said. He added that some suspects had been transported in unmarked vehicles from locations now under investigation.

The DCI chief confirmed that firearms and police equipment were stolen during the protests and later used in armed robberies near Naivasha Police Station the following night.

Amin expressed sorrow over the violence, noting that 11 police officers were seriously injured—some critically—while protecting property and peaceful demonstrators. He offered condolences to the families of those who died during the unrest.

Reaffirming the DCI’s commitment, Amin pledged to intensify investigations and ensure all those responsible for organizing or executing violent acts are brought to justice.
