Two people lost their lives on Wednesday night following a tragic road accident at Flax Forest, along the Eldoret-Eldama Ravine Road in Elgeyo-Marakwet County — the same stretch where world marathon champion Kelvin Kiptum died in 2024.
The crash involved a private vehicle and a motorcycle. Witnesses say the driver of the car swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle, lost control, and slammed into a tree. The vehicle reportedly rolled several times before the impact. Both occupants of the car died instantly.
The motorcyclist, who survived the crash, suffered serious injuries, including a broken leg, and was rushed to hospital.
Flax Forest has gained notoriety as a black spot on the highway. The area’s poor visibility, especially at night due to fog and frequent livestock crossings, has been blamed for multiple accidents.
In a chilling parallel, Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Garvais Hakizimana, died in a similar crash on February 11, 2024, just meters from this latest accident site.
Authorities reported that Kiptum’s vehicle veered off the road, hit a tree, and landed in a ditch. A third passenger survived that crash and was hospitalized.
Keiyo South Sub-County Police Commander Abdullahi Dahir had previously cited heavy fog and wandering livestock as significant risk factors on this road, urging drivers to exercise extreme caution.
