Police in Eldoret have arrested a man who is believed to be behind a syndicate involved in the theft and vandalism of water meters belonging to the Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company (ELDOWAS) leading to a Ksh450M loss yearly in Non -revenue water.
The suspect who is currently locked up at the Huruma Police station is believed to have been involved in the massive theft of water meters in a number of estates within Eldoret town and its environs.
“the suspect was among four people found stealing at night and had 12 meters already packed in a bag and was in the company of other three men who managed to escape ,they are believed to have been targeting Kapsuswa, Kamanda, Elsee and Mwanzo estates” Said Walter Ayoti, a village elder in Mwanzo estate.

The ELDOWAS managing director Peter Biwot ,has said the company has been losing Ksh 450 million of non revenue water which is close to 39% of the water distributed to Eldoret residents annually .
“Much of the non revenue water is due to vandalism of water pipes , and meters ,and we are warning the scrap metal dealers who are involved in the business of buying such meters ,we will begin to name and shame them as well as take the necessary legal action,”Said Biwott.
Biwot noted that the syndicate has posed a serious challenge in the distribution of water to the Eldoret residents and urged members of the public to be vigilant and make immediate reports to the police regarding suspicious people who may be involved in the theft of the water meters as well as water pipes .
The Deputy Police Commander Turbo Sub County Christopher Wesonga, has assured residents who have lately been affected by the theft of water meters that security will be beefed up in the respective estates .
