A county government official left a Nakuru court stunned by revealing that he was paid a ransom while accompanying the then Uasin Gishu County Governor, Jackson Mandago, on an overseas trip.
Cheruiyot Chelule, Chairperson of the Uasin Gishu County Revolving Fund, testified that he received KSh 700,000 to sign a memorandum of understanding with three universities to sponsor students from the county.
Chelule was testifying in the case where Mandago, currently the Senator for Uasin Gishu County, was charged alongside Joshua Lelei and Meshach Rono. The three officials are implicated in a KSh 1 billion overseas education scholarship scandal.
“I do not understand what my role was in the trip nor the reason for my inclusion,” said Chelule.
