Anti-narcotics officers have arrested two suspected drug traffickers after a dramatic car chase that ended in Kitanga village, Machakos County.

The suspects, identified as 38-year-old Samuel Baraza Nyongesa and Lawrence Onyango Asindi, were caught transporting 250 kilograms of bhang hidden in 10 gunny bags.

Acting on a tip-off, officers from the anti-narcotics unit pursued the suspects, who initially evaded a police dragnet at the Lari flyover in Kiambu County.

However, authorities managed to intercept the black Toyota Noah, registration number KDN 218A, in Machakos.

A thorough search of the vehicle revealed bhang with a street value estimated at KSh 7.5 million. The massive seizure has since been transported to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters for further processing.

Meanwhile, the two suspects remain in custody and are expected to be arraigned in court soon.

Kenya continues to grapple with growing drug trafficking cases, especially involving cannabis, heroin, and cocaine.

According to the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), cannabis remains the most abused illegal drug in Kenya. In 2022, over 60% of drug-related arrests involved cannabis possession and trafficking.

The government has intensified crackdowns across major highways and border points, targeting drug syndicates operating within and beyond the country.
