The family of former Lugari Member of Parliament Dr Enoch Kibunguchy is demanding thorough investigations following his sudden and shocking death, amid claims that foul play may have been involved.

Dr Kibunguchy, who served as Lugari MP between 2002 and 2007, passed away at around 11:30pm while undergoing treatment, leaving his family, friends and political allies in deep shock. According to the family, he had been experiencing severe body weakness and had been under medical care, with Dr Kituyi among the doctors attending to him.

Speaking to the media, family members said Dr Kibunguchy had been unwell for more than ten days at home before he was admitted to hospital last Thursday and later transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Lister National Hospital on Friday. Initial medical assessments reportedly pointed to food poisoning, but his condition deteriorated rapidly.

“The aggressiveness of what was termed as food poisoning is what has raised serious concerns for us as a family. We are not convinced this was ordinary food poisoning,” said a family member.

Relatives revealed that Dr Kibunguchy suffered multiple complications, including kidney failure, blood clots, stomach bleeding, breathing difficulties and other serious afflictions during his hospital stay.

“He was tortured by illness for over two weeks. There were blood clots, internal bleeding and kidney failure. I do not believe this is normal food poisoning. We suspect a different substance may have been introduced into his system,” the family stated, adding that further investigations were necessary.

Former Cabinet Secretary and DAP-K Party leader Eugene Wamalwa, a long-time family friend, confirmed that Dr Kibunguchy’s condition had appeared to improve before suddenly worsening.

DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa speaks to the media outside the morgue following the death of former Lugari MP Dr Enoch Kibunguchy.

“I last visited him in the ICU on Friday last week, and doctors indicated he was improving. Unfortunately, on Monday night, his condition took a turn for the worse,” said Wamalwa.

“Even before we finish mourning Cyrus Jirongo, we have been hit by another devastating blow. The family is demanding a postmortem to put everything to rest.”

Wamalwa also disclosed that Dr Kibunguchy had recently joined the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) and had expressed intentions to contest the Lugari parliamentary seat again in the 2027 General Election.

“He was unhappy with the current leadership, which he felt had destroyed his legacy. He wanted just one term to complete the work he had started when he previously served,” Wamalwa said.

Family members, including Kelly Walubengo, said Dr Kibunguchy had made strong political remarks in recent months and feared these could have placed him in danger.

“He was a strong leader. We had lost a pillar, and he had shown interest in joining the race in 2027. Given the circumstances and his recent statements, we feel there must have been foul play,” Walubengo said.

Josephine Kibunguchy the widow of Dr Kibunguchy , speaking on behalf of the family, appealed for calm and support as they pursue answers.

Josephine Kibunguchy, the widow of former Lugari MP Dr Enoch Kibunguchy, addresses the media as the family calls for investigations into the circumstances surrounding his sudden death.

“It still feels like a bad dream that we are slowly waking up to the reality that Daktari is no more and is lying at the morgue. We ask for peace and for people to stand with us during this difficult time as we seek the truth,” she said.

The family has formally called for a postmortem examination and comprehensive investigations to establish the exact cause of death. They also indicated that Dr Kibunguchy will be laid to rest at his rural home in Likuyani.

Dr Kibunguchy’s death has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, particularly in Lugari Constituency, where he was widely regarded as an influential leader and mentor who had intended to make a political comeback.
