Samburu County MP, Pauline Lenguris, has made a passionate call for greater support of women-led innovations in natural resource management.

Speaking during the International Conference on Gender and Technology 2025, held at Amrita University, Hon. Lenguris highlighted the critical role women in Samburu County play in fostering resilience, innovation, and economic empowerment.

In her keynote address, Hon. Lenguris shed light on various innovative programs spearheaded by Samburu women. These include traditional weaving of Ushangas (beaded ornaments), apprenticeship programs focused on traditional cooking methods, leadership and advocacy training, and initiatives that promote self-reliance.

She praised the women’s efforts, noting their significant contribution to resource management and community development.

“The women of Samburu have demonstrated resilience and creativity by engaging in culturally-rooted innovations while addressing socio-economic challenges. Their efforts not only preserve our heritage but also foster economic empowerment and sustainable resource use,” she remarked.

The MP used the platform to invite global stakeholders to visit Samburu County to experience firsthand the innovations spearheaded by local women.

She also shared adaptive strategies that address climate challenges, resource management, and socio-economic inequalities. These strategies include community engagement, education and training, resource mobilization, early warning systems, and integrating technology into solutions.

Lenguris emphasized the need for policy-level interventions to enhance the success of women-led initiatives. She urged policymakers and stakeholders to strengthen gender-responsive policies that improve women’s access to resources and decision-making opportunities.

“Women need capacity-building programs, funding, and holistic interventions to scale up their innovations. Partnerships between governments, NGOs, and the private sector will unlock more opportunities for women and create a thriving innovation space,” she added.

Her presentation delved into the emerging paradigms at the intersection of gender and technology, discussing challenges such as socio-economic inequalities and opportunities for women’s empowerment.

She argued that empowering women in natural resource management is not just a matter of gender equity but also a strategic approach to sustainable development.

The conference provided a platform for researchers, policymakers, NGOs, and civil society organizations from across the globe to explore solutions to pressing global issues.

Hon. Lenguris’ insights contributed significantly to the dialogue, underscoring the importance of women’s participation in innovation and decision-making processes.

With strong advocacy and strategic partnerships, Samburu County’s women are poised to lead in natural resource management and socio-economic development.
