In a significant breakthrough in the murder case of Eldoret taxi operator John Mwiruri Ndungu , sleuths from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested the main suspect, Mr. Mageto, who had been on the run for several months. The suspect was apprehended in Nairobi last Friday, following a warrant of arrest issued after he absconded court while out on bond.
Mr. Mageto was transferred under tight security to Eldoret, where he is set to be arraigned in court today, Monday, to formally face murder charges.
The arrest marks a turning point in the high-profile case that began on October 14, 2023, when the lifeless body of John Mwiruri was found dumped on a coffee plantation in Nandi County. The gruesome discovery shocked the local community and sparked a full-scale homicide investigation.
Initial police findings led to the arrest of multiple suspects, including Mr. Mageto, who was later released on bond pending trial. However, he vanished shortly after, prompting the court to issue a warrant for his arrest amid growing concerns over his whereabouts.
The arrest has renewed hope for justice among the victim’s family and supporters. Langas Ward MCA Francis Muya Mwangi, who has stood by the family throughout the legal proceedings, expressed relief over the latest development. “This is a welcome step forward. We are committed to seeing this case through and ensuring those responsible are held accountable,” he said.
Grace Muiruri, widow of the late John Mwiruri, shared a message of resilience and faith in the justice system. “We have waited for this day for months. I believe the truth will come out, and justice will be served for my husband and our children,” she said.
