The Ministry of Health has made available the list of health facilities that have been reported to be fraudulent and sent to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). The reports were first drawn by the Social Health Authority (SHA) and then assumed for investigation.

The ministry claims that there were at least 190 facilities that were on the list. They were divided into three depending on the stage of the investigation.

Category One: Concluded Cases

Category One: Completed Evidence of Fraud
The first category had 24 facilities. SHA had previously completed investigating these cases. The ministry assured that evidence of fraud was gathered and delivered in complete form to the DCI. “Category one comprises 24 facilities with completed evidence of fraud,” said the Health Ministry.

Category Two: Ongoing Investigations

The second category consisted of 61 facilities. These are still under active investigation by SHA. The ministry explained that when the process of gathering evidence is being done, the cases are still incomplete and will be pursued. “Category two includes 61 facilities with cases still pending,” it stated.

Category Three: Facilities Closed by KMPDC

The third category contained 105 facilities. They were shut down by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC). The facilities still had contracts with SHA, a situation which the ministry put out in fear of fraud. “Category three has 105 facilities closed by KMPDC but with contracts under SHA,” it stated.

DCI Confirms Receiving 1,188 Files

The move came after the DCI had announced it received 1,188 files from SHA and KMPDC. The files have people, organizations, and institutions suspected of healthcare fraud.

The DCI claims to have developed a multi-agency team for the analysis of the files. The team will be under the command of the DCI to speed up investigations. The aim is to reclaim stolen resources and bring people to justice.

“No one will be spared whether of high or low social status or political allegiance,” the DCI stated in a statement. The agency also promised regular public updates and urged Kenyans to remain watchful by reporting fraudulent activities.

Ministry Calls It a Milestone

The Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has confirmed the surrender of the files. He described the move as a great step towards combating corruption in the health sector. Duale described how the collaboration between SHA, KMPDC, and the DCI is advancement in the government’s battle against the protection of healthcare funds.
