Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen joined President H.E. William Samoei Ruto, top government officials, and hundreds of Kenyans at Nyayo National Stadium on Thursday to mark the country’s 62nd Jamhuri Day. The national celebration, steeped in pride and reflection, brought together people from across the country to honour Kenya’s long journey to freedom and self-governance.
During the event, CS Murkomen paid glowing tribute to the men and women whose bravery and sacrifice laid the foundation for an independent Kenya. He said the freedom which the citizens enjoy today was earned through a lot of struggle, resilience, and unwavering determination.
“We owe an inestimable debt of gratitude to the founding fathers and mothers who faced unprecedented hardships so that we could get the freedom we enjoy today,” Murkomen said. “Their courage and vision for a self-governing country remain true guides onto the path ahead.”
In his keynote address, President Ruto reflected on Kenya’s gains in development since independence. He outlined key achievements in economic reforms, infrastructure expansion, and governance, undertaking the commitment of this administration to fast-tracking developments and increasing opportunities for all Kenyans. The President outlined a future-focused plan pegged on growth, innovation, and strengthening Kenya’s position regionally and globally.
CS Murkomen only echoed the President, adding that “unity and shared purpose is our only ballot in the next chapter of our progress”. Emphasizing this statement, he clarified that the Ministry of Interior plays a central role in maintaining the peace and stability necessary for the country to thrive.
While commemorating the contribution of our freedom fighters, he said, we reassure ourselves of more services to the nation with integrity and dedication. Our Ministry will continue to safeguard peace and security because, without them, no meaningful development can flourish.
He emphasized that at the core of the Ministry’s mandate, protection of citizen’s rights and freedoms is paramount: “A secure environment, he said, serves as the backbone for sustainable economic growth, social progress, and cohesion among the nation’s population.
CS Murkomen further encouraged all Kenyans to embody the values that define the nation: peace, tolerance, hard work, and patriotism. He urged citizens to be active in building a nation where unity prevails despite political, cultural, or regional differences. Cultural presentations, military parades, and a sense of shared national pride punctuated the festive nature of Jamhuri Day. From inimitable leaders to ordinary citizens, everybody looked back at the inspiring journey that Kenya has undertaken since 1963 and clung to the perspective that this country is for peace, progress, and shared prosperity.
