Through Google’s Year in Search 2025, a Kenya that is keen on both local and international developments emerges, with citizens taking to the internet throughout the year for sporting moments, political shifts, and major global stories. The trends give a clear snapshot of what captured national interest and drove public conversations online.
The trending news in Kenya was dominated by one thing: CHAN, the African Nations Championship. Such was the level of interest in football in this country that every stage of the championship was closely followed, from the announcement of squads and the continued changes in coaching to the continental match-ups and drama unfolding in the tournament. Intense engagement drove CHAN to the very top of Google’s trending news in the country, reiterating the sport’s deep cultural influence.
Politics also played a big role in shaping what Kenyans sought online. Raila Odinga once again featured prominently among the most searched personalities, a reminder of his long-standing presence in national politics. His appearances, public statements, and ongoing political relevance ensured that his name continued to dominate online curiosity. Even out of office, Odinga remained a central figure in Kenya’s political imagination throughout the year.
Matters of public policy, like the Social Health Authority, drew most of the attention since people were struggling to comprehend what the new healthcare structure meant for Kenya. Searches related to SHA expressed the need of the public to understand how the reforms would affect them in terms of access to services, insurance requirements, and operations of the health system. This surge of interest also extended to Afya Yangu, signalling the population’s collective attempt to keep up with evolving medical programs and administrative changes.
Global events were also important in determining Kenya’s search trends. The sudden demise of Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota was among the most searched international tragedies, showcasing that sports-related stories from the rest of the world deeply resonate with Kenyan audiences. Indeed, it sent shockwaves of emotional reactions and information searching across the country.
International political figures featured in major searches. American commentator Charlie Kirk attracted notable attention, a factor that indicates increasing Kenyan engagement in worldwide political discourse. Searches related to Pope Francis further demonstrated the country’s interest in global leadership and religious affairs. Within the region, increased curiosity about Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni and former IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati showed that governance issues, both within and beyond Kenya’s borders, remained top of mind.
At the same time, questions about Kenya’s own electoral processes surfaced prominently, and the IEBC became a main point of research. The trend revealed continued public interest in election management, concerns about transparency, and democratic reforms. Collectively, these search patterns paint the picture of a nation that is informed, outward-looking, and deeply invested in both domestic and global issues. Whether following sports milestones, navigating policy changes, or reacting to international developments, Kenyans consistently turn to Google in a quest for understanding and connection.
