Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is facing backlash from Kenyans online following his tribute to the late comedian Zakaria Kariuki, popularly known as KK Mwenyewe.

Gachagua, who paid homage to the young comedian in a statement on July 15, praised him as a “content creator par excellence and inspiration to many.” However, the condolence message triggered swift criticism, with many Kenyans questioning the sincerity and timing of his words.

“I have this morning woken up to the sad demise of Mr. Zachariah Kariuki alias Mr. KK Mwenyewe,” Gachagua wrote. “A young, consistent, and resilient man who used comedy to communicate simple and creative messages to all Kenyans and spoke to our hearts.”

But Kenyans were quick to call him out—many accusing him of hypocrisy for ignoring KK Mwenyewe during his struggles and only showing support after his death.

Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi reignited the storm by revealing that he had personally approached Gachagua in 2022, asking for financial assistance to help Kariuki pay his university fees.

“On November 3, 2022, KK was fundraising for his school fees,” Wamumbi posted in response to Gachagua. “I showed you his content—he was imitating you, and I requested you to support him. You turned me down.”

Wamumbi further claimed that instead of helping KK, Gachagua directed his attention to a different content creator—the girl who coined the viral nickname “Riggy G.”

Kenyans on social media echoed Wamumbi’s sentiments, accusing the former Deputy President of abandoning the comedian when he needed help the most.

“You ignored him when he needed you. Don’t pretend to care now. Let those who supported him truly mourn him in peace,” one user wrote.

KK Mwenyewe, known for his hilarious impersonations of Gachagua, passed away on Monday night at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital after a short illness. Fellow comedian Kafengo confirmed the sad news in a Facebook post:

“We are heartbroken to announce the sudden demise of Zakaria Kariuki, AKA Mr KK Mwenyewe. He passed away yesterday evening while undergoing treatment.”
