Wajir Senator Sheikh Abbas-led Senate Committee on Devolution and
Inter-Governmental Relations is set to make an inspection tour of
various mega multi-millions shillings infrastructural facilities within
Eldoret town ahead of its conferment to a city.
The Visit is scheduled between 24th-26th August.
Eldoret Municipality Board chairman Julius Kitur said some of the
flagship projects the committee will inspect include the central
business district fire station, the refurbished Kipchoge Keino stadium
into an international sport complex, the street lights and road
upgrades within the Eldoret town.
The Senate Committee will also tour the completed sh 15 million
rehabilitation of Sosiani river and refurbished Eldoret arboretum
project situated along the Eldoret-Iten highway.
Kitur expressed optimism that cosmopolitan Eldoret town which is North
Rift’s largest commercial hub will be elevated into a city noting that
plans to grant it city status were long overdue.
“We have actually fulfilled all the legal requirements for Eldoret
municipality’s elevation into a city. So those peddling lies that we
have not met some requirements are behind new and we urge the
residents to dismiss the claims as propaganda,” said Kitur.
Speaking in Eldoret, Kitur stated that the city status will not only
lead to establishment of new business ventures but also increase
revenue streams that spur economic growth in the region.
In the event Eldoret municipality is elevated to a city, this will
bring the number of cities in the country to five.
Other towns that have been granted city status after meeting all the
legal procedures include Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru and Kisumu.
According to Kitur, some of the mega projects the Uasin Gishu county
government has been undertaking in preparation for new status are the
improvement of the drainage system and dumping site.
Eldoret town got a major boost after the Senate Speaker Amason Kingi
stated that the upper House will consider a resolution by Uasin Gishu
County to confer city status to the municipality.
The Senate received the resolution from the county assembly after
adopting an ad-hoc committee report on the conferment of city status
to the Municipality of Eldoret two months ago.
“I refer the resolution by the Uasin Gishu County assembly to the
standing Committee on Devolution and Inter-governmental Relations for
consideration,” said Kingi.
The Committee, in its report two months ago, recommended the
Municipality of Eldoret be upgraded having met all the requirements.
If approved by the Senate, the report will now be forwarded to
President William Ruto to grant the town a city charter.
