MTRH CEO urges government to expedite UHC enrollment

MTRH CEO , Dr Wilson aruasa Friday  joined  other leaders in commemorating World TB day  marked at Huruma Grounds, Eldoret in Uasin Gishu county.

The event was presided over by the Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Health CS Susan Wafula .

Dr Aruasa said Moi Teaching and Referral hospital had  realized  major  strides  in the management  and treatment of  TB.

“At Moi  Teaching and Referral hospital(MTRH), We are  the national centre of excellence for managing  Multi-Drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR) and Extremely Drug Resistant TB ( Ex DR). There is no other such centre in the entire  country” Dr Aruasa opined.

He said the process of creating the centre  commenced through a series of trials.

“ About 10 years ago, we did not know which drugs to use , we worked with the  Ministry department of  National leprosy and TB program to try the medicines under the  auspices of  The World Health Organization (WHO,” Said Dr Aruasa

He said Uasin Gishu county for the last  one year,  had 1,900 patients  who were positive with  TB. Out of these a third were diagnosed and treated  successfully at MTRH.

He noted that  this strategy  used for TB  has helped in  applying  the same  to other diseases, wowing that it is the  best strategy to achieve   universal health coverage.

He mentioned several  sectors that should play roles in fighting TB including : Family, County  governments ,National government through the  Ministry of health,KEMRI, NHIF,KNH, MTRH and other development partners such as WHO.

“ We  only need Universal health coverage so that we can have bottom up success in the healthcare space. In MTRH , we waive a billion shillings every year for patients who cannot afford healthcare,” Dr Aruasa said

Dr Aruasa  called upon  Prim Cabinet Minister  Musalia Mudavadi  and  Health Cabinet  secretary to expedite enrollment of citizens into Universal Health Cover   so that they can access healthcare easily.

“Please expedite enrollment of  Citizens into UHC, Uasin Gishu was allocated 15,000 households but they have not  yet been enrolled,the same story is in every county in this region,Let’s expedite enrollment  so that all these people can access healthcare with ease” Affirmed the  MTRH CEO.
