Collins: Finding Pride and Purpose Behind the Wheel in Eldoret
Collins says he has learned to appreciate his work as long as it enables him to meet his basic needs and put food on the table.

For Collins, a matatu operator based in Eldoret Town, his daily journey is more than just a way to earn a living. He operates along the Eldoret–Chepkoilel route, a job he says brings him happiness and a sense of purpose.
Collins says he has learned to appreciate his work as long as it enables him to meet his basic needs and put food on the table. He believes there is dignity in honest work and respects what his job provides for him.
However, his work comes with several challenges. One of the main difficulties is low business turnout, as there are times when he gets only a few passengers. He also faces an unfavorable working environment, particularly during periods of heavy rain.
Competition from other transport operators, including motorbike riders, is another challenge. In addition, Collins says high fuel prices and taxes make it more difficult to operate a profitable transport business.
Despite these challenges, Collins remains grateful for what his work provides. For him, being able to earn a living and take care of his basic needs is something worth appreciating.
Beyond his work, Collins says he is proud to be Kenyan because he values the freedom and peace that the country offers.
His story reflects the experiences of many Kenyans who work hard every day, facing economic challenges while finding dignity, purpose and pride in making an honest living.
