Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has called for higher standards of integrity in public office, taking aim at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over what he described as unresolved questions surrounding his leadership record.

Speaking during a public address, Duale emphasised the need for transparency and accountability, arguing that public trust is anchored on credibility and openness.

“Kenya deserves leaders of integrity, not endless controversy,” Duale said, adding that those in leadership must be prepared to offer clear and consistent explanations regarding their conduct.

The CS referenced past allegations linked to Gachagua, including claims of corruption and scrutiny over his wealth that have previously been subject to court proceedings. He also cited earlier incidents in Gachagua’s career, including his dismissal from the civil service in 1997 while serving as a District Officer in Laikipia over misconduct allegations.

Duale further pointed to Gachagua’s arrest in July 2021 by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations over alleged money laundering and abuse of office involving substantial financial transactions.

He also mentioned reported disputes related to the estate of the late Nderitu Gachagua, noting that while such matters remain contested, they raise concerns that require clarity.

Additionally, Duale referenced Gachagua’s impeachment, describing it as a historic constitutional process that removed a sitting Deputy President from office over allegations including violation of oath and divisive conduct.

“This is a pattern that raises urgent questions,” Duale said. “Can we trust leadership weighed down by persistent integrity concerns? Can a nation unite under divisive politics? Can accountability mean anything if we ignore such a record?”

He challenged the former Deputy President to comprehensively address the allegations, urging full disclosure.

“If he wishes to lecture the nation, he must be ready to answer every question, not just the convenient ones,” Duale stated.

The remarks are expected to heighten political debate as discussions around governance, accountability, and leadership integrity continue to shape the national discourse.
