Five-time Berlin Marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge has praised the Sirikwa Classic Cross Country for bridging the gap between elite runners and emerging talents, saying the mentorship element is key to Kenya’s continued dominance in athletics.
Speaking during the event in Uasin Gishu County — widely regarded as the “city of champions” — Kipchoge noted that the competition brings together accomplished athletes and runners who have never competed beyond the county level.
He said such exposure motivates upcoming athletes and strengthens the country’s running culture.
Kipchoge emphasized that the large turnout of young participants demonstrates Kenya’s deep pool of talent and the need for continued investment in grassroots athletics.
Event director Barnaba Korir echoed the sentiments, describing the competition as crucial in nurturing future champions.
According to Korir, involving children gives them a platform to grow and interact with elite athletes, which boosts motivation and ambition.
He added that even small rewards earned during the races encourage young athletes to pursue the sport seriously.
Organizers believe the event not only showcases Kenya’s resilience and running heritage but also serves as a development pathway that could produce the next generation of world-class athletes.
