The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has appointed Moses Ledama Sunkuli as the acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Commission Secretary, with immediate effect.

In a statement released on Thursday, IEBC said Sunkuli, who currently serves as the Commission’s Director of Electoral Operations, will hold the acting position for six months or until a substantive CEO is recruited and appointed.

The role became vacant following the resignation of Marjan Hussein Marjan, who stepped down after reaching a mutual agreement to terminate his tenure.

IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon acknowledged Marjan’s contributions since his appointment in March 2022, highlighting his leadership during a period when the Commission functioned without a fully constituted team of Commissioners until July 2025.

“We thank Mr. Marjan for his dedication and professional service to the IEBC and wish him success in his future endeavours,” Ethekon said.

Marjan’s resignation followed mounting pressure from opposition parties calling for his exit ahead of the upcoming General Election. Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka had expressed concerns that the election might not be free and fair if Marjan remained in office.

IEBC emphasized that Sunkuli brings extensive experience and deep institutional knowledge, positioning him to steer the Commission effectively during this transitional period.
