Thousands of Kenyan nationals have congregated at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi as the country marks the 62nd Jamhuri Day, an historical event that marks the country’s independence and establishment as a republic. The event, which is among the country’s biggest and most colorful celebrations, will be presided over by President William Ruto.

The theme associated with this year’s event is ‘Tourism and Wildlife’. Notably, it emphasizes the country’s rich natural resources and tourist centers. The main reason for choosing the theme might be associated with promoting national pride and associated benefits that can be derived from boosting tourism.

Huge crowds were pouring into the stadium from early morning hours, with families, university students, and local groups congregating to watch the national celebrations. The event was portrayed as taking place in a festive and colorful setting.

Adding a diplomatic touch to the festivities, President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana is the chief guest. The president touched down in Nairobi at midnight, and this marks the beginning of a two-day state visit amidst the national festivities for Kenya. The presence of President Mahama at the event marks the historic relationship between Ghana and Kenya and goes beyond demonstrating unity among African nations.

The Jamhuri Day ceremony will feature a parade, cultural shows, and speeches that will remind listeners and audience members about the progress made as a nation since gaining independence in 1963. But it will be necessary for leaders to review a parade that will be dominated by participants from various quarters, including the Defence Forces of Kenya, police, youth groups, and civil society.

President Ruto will most likely focus on addressing and celebrating the progress made by the country within a year and will emphasize various projects related to developments undertaken on various fronts. The inclusion of tourism and wildlife will emphasize that the country not only wants to be an attractive destination for tourists but will also preserve it for generations to come.

Security measures have been heightened with police and national security personnel making sure that all who will be there, either participants or visitors, are safe. Traffic control measures have also been put in place for easy flow to and from Nyayo Stadium. The 62nd Jamhuri Day anniversary presents an opportunity not only to commemorate the indepence of Kenya but also an event where national unity, diversity, and tourism opportunities will be showcased.
