The mood remains heavy in Chesongoch, Murkutwo, Embobut, Sambirir, Kipkenda, and other nearby areas in the wake of fatal landslides and mudslides that hit Elgeyo Marakwet County on November 1st and 2nd. A five-day continuous rain triggered a disaster characterized by destruction never seen before; it robbed families of their loved ones, homes, and livelihoods.

Yesterday, Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen joined grieving families and local leaders for the emotional burial rite of 31 victims from Chesongoch and Murkutwo. These were part of the 41 people who lost their lives in the tragedy, a toll that has shaken the entire nation. While addressing the mourners, Murkomen conveyed condolences on behalf of President William Samoei Ruto and senior national officials, reassuring the community that the Government stands with them during this painful period.

Murkomen said the President had given firm instructions to ensure that no support which the families affected by the disaster required was delayed. He added that the Government would move with speed in efforts to assist survivors, in both short-term and long-term recovery plans.

Among the immediate interventions, the CS pointed out the ongoing relocation of residents living in precarious disaster-prone zones to safer areas. He noted that relocation is necessary to avoid further deaths amidst unpredictable weather conditions that pose a great risk. Murkomen also announced the deployment of psychosocial teams to offer counselling to families struggling with trauma, especially those who witnessed the landslides or lost multiple relatives.

To ensure that relief assistance is handled responsibly, the CS directed the County Commissioner to strictly supervise all donations, including Government support and contributions from well-wishers. He emphasized that each and every item or one shilling sent to assist the victims must reach the rightful beneficiary. Any form of corruption, diversion or misuse of aid, he warned, will attract stringent action.

Murkomen also addressed the long-term strategy towards securing the region. He said that the government remains committed to improving security operations through intelligence-led strategies, improving access roads, improving local markets, as well as supporting community-based economic initiatives that will build resilience among the people to withstand any future shocks. As families continue to mourn, Murkomen prayed for peace and comfort for all who lost loved ones. He expressed hope that God’s grace will strengthen the affected communities as they navigate the difficult days ahead.
