Nandi County police arrested three suspects after a lorry carrying 1,375 litres of ethanol was intercepted in Kapsabet. The suspects were arrested on Wednesday during a police raid on illegal business of controlled substances.

The suspects were arrested and are being held at Kapsabet Police Station. The authorities vowed that they will be arraigned in court to answer charges of carrying the chemical illegally. The ethanol, as well as the vehicle used during the operation, was impounded and booked as exhibits.

In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) explained that the successful operation is part of a wider crackdown on cartels that specialize in trafficking ethanol and other illegal products. The service explained that such products, when diverted into open markets, present serious health hazards and encourage the production of hazardous alcohol drinks.

Law enforcement agencies highlighted the threat of re-packing of ethanol and using it to produce illicit brews, warning that the trend has also had serious implications on health and even lives before. The police also continued to reiterate their commitment to safeguarding communities through increased surveillance and dismantling supply chains supporting the business.

The public’s safety is always our top priority. We shall not desist from our mission to disrupt the operations of criminals who engage in illegal ethanol business,” said the NPS press release.

The agency also appealed to the public to actively join in assisting security programs. People were called upon to provide intelligence and provide tips on suspicious behavior through toll-free hotlines provided by the police. Officials stressed that collaboration from communities is crucial in achieving lasting victory over illegal drugs and in keeping people safe.

The Wednesday raid is evidence of the government’s sustained endeavor to cut off the supply of hazardous chemicals and illegal production of booze. Security agencies assured the public that such raids will continue across the country until the rings behind the illegal business are broken.

Through the arrest of the three suspects and the seizure of the gigantic ethanol consignment, police sent a clear message to those involved in the business that the law will ultimately catch up with them.
