Kwale county governor Fatuma Achani has been feted by The National Council of Churches of Kenya NCCK for becoming the first female governor in coast region and The  first Muslim governor in Kenya.

 

Ncck  is among other partners who contributed to her victory through a program funded by UN women dubbed as “Wadada wa Pawa” that was aimed at promotion of  women in  leadership and governance as well as peace and security processes and decision making in Kwale county.

 

Phyllis Kamau Programs Director Ncck, said the program was implemented in 6 counties including , Kwale, Kitui ,Turkana, Kisii, Embu and Samburu.

 

 

 

 

 

” Among the 6 counties Wadada wa pawa program was only successful in Kwale county ,we managed to have two women who were elected, we have the governor honorable Fatuma Achani and Ramisi ward representative Khanifa Mwajirani ,this is so encouraging ,it is clear that our communities support women leadership, its vivid that the religious and cultural beliefs against women leadership is a thing of the past ,”Said Mrs. Kamau.

 

She encouraged more women in Kwale county to come out in large numbers and vie for political seats come 2027 .

 

“We are looking forward to seeing more women taking top positions not only in politics but also in different offices, our Kenyan new constitution 2010 recognises women leadership unlike before, ” posed Mrs.Kamau.

 

Speaking in her office after receiving the award Kwale county governor Fatuma Achani expressed her gratitude to UN women for funding the Wadada wa Pawa program and supporting her victory.

 

“Despite being the county deputy governor for the last 10 years, my political journey for gubernatorial was not smooth but I want to thank partners who walked along with me and reached to my victory, I want to take this opportunity to thank UN women through NCCK for the support I don’t take it for granted and I assure you that I will support and empower more women in Kwale to follow my footsteps ,but I want to challenge UN women to bring in more funds for this program to keep on moving it is of great help for women, “Said the governor.
