The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has released a detailed press statement regarding the investigations into the criminal activities that marred the June 25, 2025 protests in Kenya.

The statement, signed by DCI Director Mohamed I. Amin, CBS, OGW, ‘ndc’ (K), outlines the escalating situation and the measures being taken to restore order.

The protests, initially peaceful and dubbed the “Gen-Z Anniversary Protests,” saw a troubling turn as criminal elements infiltrated the demonstrations.

Reports indicate that approximately 400 armed individuals stormed the Ndunyu Njeru police station in North Kinangop Sub-county, demanding the release of four prisoners arrested for stock theft. This led to the burning of the station and the tragic deaths of three suspects, with one critically hospitalized.

The DCI has arrested 485 individuals in connection with these incidents, with 448 already charged in court and 37 under active investigation for charges including murder, terrorism, rape, arson, and possession of illegal firearms.

Preliminary findings reveal a well-funded plot to incite chaos, with evidence suggesting strategic mobilization of individuals into Nairobi to execute a coordinated agenda of disruption.

The statement also highlights the widespread destruction of critical infrastructure, including Kikuyu Law Courts, Kikuyu County Government Offices, and multiple police stations.

Several firearms and police equipment were stolen, some already used in violent robberies in Naivasha. Businesses across Nairobi CBD, Kitengela, Dagoretti, and other areas were looted, with millions of shillings stolen from vandalized ATMs.

The DCI condemns the acts of sexual violence and calls for public cooperation in sharing information to track stolen goods and apprehend suspects. The National Police Service reaffirms its commitment to delivering justice and ensuring national safety.
