Liverpool FC is on the verge of achieving a landmark transfer for Bayer Leverkusen’s attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz, with an official bid exceeding €100 million submitted to the German club.

The deal, which includes additional performance-based add-ons, is set to surpass Liverpool’s previous transfer record of £85 million paid for Darwin Núñez in 2022.

According to renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Wirtz has communicated his desire to join Liverpool, declining interest from Bayern Munich.

The 22-year-old German international has reportedly agreed to personal terms on a five-year contract with the Merseyside club.

Bayer Leverkusen values Wirtz at approximately €150 million (£126 million), but negotiations are ongoing, with Liverpool exploring options to structure the deal, potentially including player exchanges to meet the valuation.

Wirtz has been instrumental in Leverkusen’s recent successes, contributing 16 goals and 15 assists in the 2024/25 season, leading the team to a second-place finish in the Bundesliga. Over his tenure with Leverkusen, he has amassed 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 appearances.

Bayern Munich, initially confident in securing Wirtz’s signature, were reportedly taken aback by his decision to favour Liverpool. The influence of Liverpool’s new manager, Arne Slot, is believed to have played a significant role in swaying Wirtz’s choice.

As Liverpool aims to finalise the agreement swiftly, the club is also engaged in discussions to acquire Leverkusen’s right-back Jeremie Frimpong, indicating a strategic approach to strengthening the squad ahead of the upcoming season.

The transfer window officially opens on June 1, and Liverpool is eager to conclude the deal promptly to integrate Wirtz into pre-season preparations.

Should the transfer materialise, it would not only set a new club record but also underscore Liverpool’s commitment to bolstering their attacking options with top-tier talent.
