Four suspects linked to a string of violent armed robberies have been arrested in a security operation conducted by detectives in Nairobi, with three firearms and 50 rounds of ammunition recovered.
The suspects — three Ugandan nationals and one Kenyan — were arrested on Thursday, May 22, following an intelligence-led operation in Dandora, Saika, Pumwani, and Huruma estates. The crackdown was spearheaded by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) after an increase in robberies in Nairobi and Western Kenya.
The DCI’s Crime Research detectives had earlier analyzed the gang’s mode of operation, leading to the well-coordinated pursuit by the Operation Action Team, supported by the Intelligence Bureau.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Sipholi Sam Wafula alias Sande, Ogomba Alex, Mohammed Musa, and Wafula Clinton.
Sipholi was the first to be arrested. A search of his rented house in Saika led to the recovery of a Falcon pistol with 11 rounds of ammunition hidden under a pillow.
Ogomba Alex was later cornered in Dandora. A raid on his home uncovered an AK-47 rifle loaded with 30 rounds, stashed beneath a couch.
Further investigations guided detectives to Huruma, where Mohammed Musa was arrested. He was found residing with his family and is believed to be the owner of the AK-47 rifle.
Preliminary findings indicate the three Ugandans had recently re-entered Kenya via the Malaba border on May 21 after fleeing to Uganda following a robbery in Eastleigh.
Wafula Clinton, the only Kenyan and suspected gang ringleader, was arrested in Pumwani. A Palleberum FEG 9mm pistol with nine rounds was discovered tucked in his waistband during the arrest. Clinton is believed to have been the mastermind behind the gang’s operations.
The arrests averted a planned armed robbery at a business premises on 12th Street in Eastleigh. Other accomplices managed to escape but have been identified and are being tracked by detectives.
The four suspects are currently in custody at DCI Starehe for further processing. An identification parade is scheduled, and they will be arraigned in court upon completion of investigations.
