Eldoret police are investigating Nectar Lounge and Grill, a drinking establishment located along Ronald Ngala Street, following a complaint by a member of the public. The complaint alleges that a middle-aged man was held against his will for over half a month after being unable to pay a Ksh 7,000 bill for drinks, according to Turbo Sub County Deputy Police Commander William Kaptich.

“The middle-aged man was heard crying by a fellow reveler who then reported the incident to the police officers,” Kaptich said.

The managers of Nectar Lounge and Grill were arrested and are assisting with the investigation. Kaptich emphasized that it is illegal for the establishment to detain a person in lieu of payment.

“This is an outright contravention of human rights under the Constitution,” Kaptich stated. “The law only allows the police to hold a person for not more than 24 hours before they are produced in a court of law.”

Kaptich has issued a stern warning to all drinking establishments. “Supposing the man died while being held illegally? I want to warn all drinking joints that they do not have any right to hold a person against their will,” he said. “Whenever they experience challenges with their clients, they should involve law enforcement officers.”

The unidentified man was reportedly drinking at the establishment on May 15th, after  the KDF pass-out parade. According to reports, some of KDF officers joined the man in his drinking spree. However, when he was unable to settle his bill, the management allegedly held him captive for 16 days.

Efforts to reach Kenneth Chirchir, one of the directors of Nectar Lounge and Grill, for comment regarding the alleged illegal holding cell have been unsuccessful.
