UASU demands Substantive appointments of VC’s in public varsities!
“Let the appointments of the new VCs in our public universities be done purely on merit regardless of one’s religion or political affiliations”

The government should expedite the appointment of new Vice chancellors in public universities in the country to ensure stability at the universities, University Academic Staff Union has said.
The union took issue with the government for taking too long to name substantive VCs despite interviews having been concluded and three names forwarded to the Cabinet Secretary for appointments.
Speaking to Hubzmedia in Eldoret , Philip Chebunet, the UASU University of Eldoret ( UOE ) chapter Secretary General told the government to move with speed and address the issue to save the public universities from more crises.
“Let the appointments of the new VCs in our public universities be done purely on merit regardless of one’s religion or political affiliations if our institutions of higher learning are expected to be run and managed in an efficient manner,” added Chebunet.
He said that key operations at various institutions of higher learning were on the verge of crumbling to a halt due to delay by government to make replacements after the term in office of the previous holders of
the senior leadership position ended or retired.
“The government should move with speed and appoint new Vice chancellors so that they can start overseeing their operations in the wake of financial problems bedeviling some of public institutions,”said Chebunet.
At the University of Eldoret, the term of the VC Prof Akenga has come to an end after serving for 10 years at the helm of the institution of higher learning.
The university council under the chairmanship of Dr Ismail Buro appointed Prof Wilson Ngetich to be the acting vice chancellor.
Ngetich has been serving at the university as deputy vice chancellor in charge of administration and finance.
The Uasu secretary general said the universities are faced with a myriad of challenges, key among them is the implementation of the signed collective bargaining agreement and funding from the exchequer.
The acting VC’s, Chebunet said, cannot address any issue facing the universities, a situation he noted has aggravated the smooth running of the affected public institutions across the country.
He implored on the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to carry out investigations in the financial status of universities where the former VC’s term in office ended.
This he argued, will enable the new VC’s to start on a sound leadership and financial footing to save them from inheriting the burden of the former holders of the leadership positions.
“The former VC’s who messed up their institutions should not pass the same baton to their predecessors and that is why we are calling on EACC and DCI to probe their office first before new ones take over the
leadership positions at the public universities,” argued Chebunet.
