Fish farming in Elgeiyo Marakwet

Farmers in Elgeyo Marakwet County have now embraced fish farming as the demand for fish continues to rise within the North Rift region.

Cultural beliefs within the region have over  the years  hindered the consumption of  fish by the local communities who are mainly Highland Nilotes who largely  depend on farming and  animal husbandry.

However the  trend  has shifted recently .

Dwindling stocks of wild fish in lake  Victoria  have been attributed to overfishing and Tilapia, the most popular  freshwater fish in Kenya, has become scarce .

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wesley Rotich has commended farmers  who have already embraced fish farming as a means of  diversification.

“It is now evident that we can do fish farming in Elgeyo Marakwet. This has been demonstrated by Mr. Vincent Yator and Mr. Raymond Kosgei from Salaba and Kaptum villages in Emsoo Ward, Keiyo North Sub County “, noted the Governor.

The two farmers have close to 2,000 fingerlings in each of their ponds.

I encourage our farmers to try their hand in fish production so as to benefit from the rising demand of fish in our County. He added

Farmers willing to engage in fish farming within Elgeyo Marakwet  county have been urged to  liaise with the Fisheries Department (0719860654)
